Ji Pengfei was a senior official in China's foreign service for many years, and for a relatively short time between 1972 and 1974 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs. He is evidently a skilled political survivor as he managed to work right through the Cultural Revolution without being disgraced at the time or being told to account afterwards. However, despite many years at a comparatively senior level in China's hierarchy, he never reached the very top politically. He was made a member of the Party's Central Committee in 1973 during his time as Foreign Minister, but he was replaced in the Foreign Ministry shortly thereafter, and was in effect pensioned off in the post of Secretary- General of the NPC Standing Committee.
