Jardines Feking Manager told me today that a colleague of his was told by Dick Lee that Li hude, Director of the Third Department of the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade (dealing with Europe, Australasia and North America) is to be sent to NCNA Hong kong as becond Director.
2. This does not quite tally with the last sentence of your telno 680 to the FCO, which said that the present incumbent would stay on. Nor does MFEKT seem a likely recruiting ground for NCNA Directors. But since 1 gather that Dick Lee's connections with NCNA are rather good, I thought I should pass this on for what it may be worth.

Incidentally if the story were true it would be no bad thing. Li's urbanity and excellent command of English would compensate to some extent for Xu Jiatun's inadequacies.
