his name. Xi did not reappear until after the sale of the

Gang of Four", when he was appointed to the leading positions

in Guangdong. After about two years he was transferred to

Peking where he has become an influential figure in the

present leadership.

Xi Zhongxun is engaged in a wide range of activities.

He has played an important role in the development of

China's legal system, through his position in the National

People's Congress, and is also active in representational

duties such as making trips abroad. Within the Party

with organisations he has responsibilities for relations between

the Chinese Communist Party and foreign political policies.

He is involved in United Front work, including overseas

Chinese affairs. He has also begun to meet visitors from

Hong Kong such as the Trade Development Council Mission led by

Sir Y K Kan in November 1982, and a Youth Delegation led by

Allen Leg in May 1983,
