Just as Australia has a non-threatening relationship with China, so too does it have a position in Hong Kong which has no political or strategic interests to serve. If given the opportunity it could offer opinions which

are politically disinterested but which reflect the thinking of the foreign investors and foreign business interests whose presence/ has been one of the vital factors in Hong Kong's economic performance. I stress that I do not mean the Australian Government but Australian business.

But, as I

have mentioned the Government, I should point out that it has not attempted in any way to interfere in this matter. This is further evidence of the appropriateness of Australia as a source of opinion.

I believe Australians could offer helpful views on all the matters affecting the business future of Hong kong, and I leave you with the thought that this is one way in which in being helpful in friends can express their friendship the solution of difficult problems, even one as difficult as that bequeathed by history in the present status of

Hong Kong.
