The Cambridge University Chinese Society consists of one hundred

and twenty students, of whom approximately seventy being from

Hongkong. Recently, and particularly since the Prime Minister's

visit to Peking, doubts have been cast on the future of the British

colony; these have had some adverse effects on the confidence of

investors and potential investors in Hongkong and thus subsequently

affected the sound financial, commercial, and indestrial arrange-

ments in the colony upon which the livelihood of the Hongkong people relies. We are naturally very concerned.

Being a college secretary for the Cambridge University Conservative

Association, I was most impressed by the speech you made here last

term as the President of CUCA. You clearly demonstrated your firm

grasp for British foreign policies.

Therefore I now, as the newly elected President of the Chinese

Society, would like to invite you to come to Cambridge again to

enlighten us on the subject of the British Government's policies

on Hongkong and Anglo-Chinese relation. Since the Conservatives

look like forming the next government despite the Darlington by- election result, your opinion will be regarded with great interest

by our members.
