I am

Thank you for your letter of 25 March to the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary, inviting him to address your Society on Hong Kong and Anglo/Chinese relations. afraid that, because of the pressure of other commitments, Mr Pym is unable to accept your invitation, but he has asked me to thank you for your kind remarks about his speech to the CUCA and to pass on his good wishes to your Society.

The subject of Hong Kong is one with which we are very concerned at the moment, as you will know. We were pleased to reach agreement last September with the Chinese leaders to enter talks through diplomatic channels on the future of Hong Kong, and meetings have been taking place in Peking since then. We believe that, given our common aim of maintaining the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong, it will be possible to reach a solution which will be acceptable to the British and Chinese Governments and to the people of Hong Kong.

Yours sincerely

nesk
