CONFIDENTIAL

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH THE BRUNEI GURKHA BATTALION IF NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE SULTAN OF BRUNEI BREAK DOWN?

BASIS OF PRESENT DEFENCE ARRANGEMENT WITH BRUNEI?

In the short term the battalion

would have to be accommodated

elsewhere; probably in Hong Kong.

We would then have to consider

the longer term options carefully.

An Agreement in 1971 between HMG

and the Sultan of Brunei (Cmnd 4932).

This amended a previous 1959

Agreement. Under it, inter alia_7

Brunei provides facilities for

UK forces and Britain agrees to

loan personnel and otherwise assist

the Sultan's defence force. In

addition we have agreed to consult

together to determine what measures

should be taken in relation to

an external attack on the State.

The Gurkha battalion remains

under a separate confidential

Exchange of Letters._7

On independence the 1979 Treaty

of Friendship and Cooperation

(Cmnd 7496) comes into force.
