PROJECTS
Tuen Mun Light Railway
A number of British companies including Metro Cammell, GEC and Balfour Beatty are
interested in this project worth £50m, with UK content estimated at £35m. The work
involves the provision of light railway vehicles and supporting equipment. However,
the decision to proceed with the project awaits an agreement with an operator.
date set for completion at 1986 appears increasingly unlikely. Prospects for some
UK involvement should be good.
The
Lantau Island to Mainland Link
This major bridge project, which has been under consideration for some time is likely
to be worth £300m with a UK content of approximately £100 million. Cleveland Redpath
have been closely following the opportunity which will involve the construction of
three bridges linking Lantau with the mainland. As a major project involving long-
term financing, the prospects for an early decision to proceed do not seem good in
the current climate.
Lye Mun Bridge
A number of UK companies are interested in this project to construct a bridge to
carry a road/rail link between Hong Kong island and Kowloon. This work would be
worht £60 to £70 million. A design study has been completed by Mott Hay and Anderson
with Wilbur Smith Associates.
New International Airport
The Hong Kong Government commissioned a US consultant firm (Parsons) to study proposals
to replace the exisitng congested airport site at Kai Tak with a new international
airport at Chek Lap Kok on Lantau Island.
The recently published report concluded that the very high cost of the airport development
together with associated infrastructure could not be justified in the immediate future
and Kai Tak should be improved to meet increased demand.
