The Secretary of State has asked for recommendations for his bilateral visits overseas in 1984. At the PUS's meeting of DUSSS on 16 November, I was asked to put recommendations to you.
RECOMMENDATION
2.
I recommend that the Secretary of State should:
(a)
visit the Ivory Coast as well as Nigeria in January;
(b)
(c)

accompany The Queen on her State Visit to Jordan at
the end of March;
visit Japan and Korea, and possibly two or three
other countries, during the Easter recess at the end of April;
bear in mind, perhaps in connection with the visit
to the Far East, the need to pay a confidence-boosting visit to Hong Kong;
aim to visit Saudi Arabia, Syria and Israel during the
summer recess.

BACKGROUND AND ARGUMENT

At the meeting of DUSSs, it was decided that the recommendations to be put to the Private Secretary should be based on:
(i)
(ii)
a January visit to Nigeria plus one or two other
countries, bearing in mind that the Secretary of State will have a team of businessmen with him;
visits to the Middle East and to the Far East, one at Easter, and one in September, the Middle East visit perhaps to include Egypt, and the Far East to visit Japan and perhaps Korea and Hong Kong.
