1. As you will have seen from Hong Kong tel 859 the visit of the Unofficials has now been announced in Hong Kong. The text was as in paragraph 9 of our tel 386 to Peking. The Governor will have some separate calls on Friday, 1 July, and the programme for the whole group will be on 4 and 5 July.

I should be grateful if Mr Burton could handle the mechanics of the visit. This will involve fixing firm times for calls already agreed in principale on the Secretary of State and on Mrs Thatcher, and on making firm arrangements now for the lunch which Mr Luce has agreed to give on 5 July. I am sure Mr Clift will want to discuss this whole visit on Monday but it would be a good idea in the meantime to seek PSD's approval for funding the lunch. You might have a word with Mr Warren-Gash y about the guest list but I should have thought it ought to
include Officials, MP's, Sir Jack Cater, etc (not journalists). There will also be some liaison to do with the Hong Kong

Government Office, who will, I assume, look after meeting, greeting and transportation arrangements, as well as accommodation. We are still waiting for Hong Kong's further views on a proposed drinks party (paragraph 1 of Hong Kong tel 848).
3. We have asked Hong Kong whether the Unofficials will want to raise with Ministers any subjects other than the future and we await their reply. Mrs Priest and I will meanwhile start
work the input on the future of Hong Kong.
