VISIT TO BRITAIN BY HONG KONG UNOFFICIALS
1.
Mr Luce is anxious to ensure that the Hong Kong Unofficials are given a good reception when they visit the UK next week. They will be looking for signs of the Government's continuing concern and commitment, and are likely to be influenced by the way that their visit is handled as well as by what is said in the substantive discussions. He would like their programme to be looked at imaginatively. One possibility might be to set up a half-day meeting at Chevening (morning plus lunch). We should also take steps to discover whether any of them will be bringing their wives with them and, if so, consider how they might be included in any entertainment that is offered.
2. I would be grateful if a short note could be prepared for Mr Luce setting out where the arrangements now stand, with a view to an office meeting in the next couple of days.
