We spoke. I have now received Mr Thomson's submission required.

of 8 July 1983 and have pursued the matter further. The situation in fact seems clearer than my files at first suggested.

Of the 250 deputies in the Portuguese Parliament, 246 represent Metropolitan Portugal (including the Azores and Madeira), and the remaining 4 represent Portuguese citizens resident in Europe (2), and the rest of the world, including Macao (2). Party allegiance of the "rest of the world" deputies in the last three general elections was as follows:-

In February 1980 the then Minister for Internal Administration told our Ambassador that the Government was studying the question of creating a separate constituency for Macao. Nothing more seems to have come of this idea, perhaps because it would require constitutional changes.
