Thank you for your letter of 12 January. I apologise for the delay in replying but I needed to consult other interested departments.

I enclose for your information fact sheets on the Falkland Islands and Dependencies, Gibraltar and St Helena.

I regret that we are unable to answer your questions on the parity of the pound sterling with St Helena, Gibraltar, Falkland Islands and the Republic of Ireland and suggest that you contact the Bank of England at the following address:

Bank of England Threadneedle Street LONDON EC2

St Helena and the Falkland Islands are not members of the EEC. non-European territories having special relations with an EEC member state the territories are associated with the Community under Article 131 of the Treaty of Rome. This association was designed to promote the economic and social development of such territories.

Britain has always been the principal trading partner of the Falkland Islands. Before the Argentine invasion, limited trading took place between the Islands and certain Latin American countries including Chile and Argentina. Since June 1982, however, constraints on transport have meant that trade from the Islands has been exclusively with the United Kingdom.

The details on St Helena trading are unavailable at present.

The information you require on St Helena is covered by the fact sheet enclosed.

I am sorry I cannot be of more help.
