Our reference

Date 21 March 1983

Thank you for your letter of 5 March. I am very grateful for your information on the currencies of St Helena and Gibraltar. I should, however, point out that further questions on the currencies of these and other Dependent Territories should be addressed to the Bank of England.

The answers to your nationality related questions are as follows:

i. each Dependent Territory has its own immigration

laws;

ii.

iii.

iv.

British citizenship was not granted to anyone born in a British Dependent Territory; the status held was citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies, acquired by birth in a Dependent Territory;

the three new categories of citizenship are British Citizens, British Dependent Territory Citizens and British Overseas Citizens. British Dependent Territory citizens generally have the right of abode in the Dependent Territory through which they acquired their status. The question of such a citizens's freedom of movement to other territories or the United Kingdom, would depend on his status under the individual immigration laws of the territories or the United Kingdom;

Australian and Canadian citizens along with other Commonwealth citizens may obtain British passports, but. only in very limited and exceptional circumstances.

Your questions on the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man should be directed to the Home Office at 50 Queen Anne's Gate, London SW.
