PRIVATE MEMBER'S MOTION: DEPENDENT TERRITORIES: FRIDAY 15 APRIL
1.
Today's Order Paper shows that Mr Ivor Stanbrook (Con, Orpington), in winning first place in the ballot for Private Members' Motions on Friday 15 April, has put down the following subject for debate:
Dependencies of the United Kingdom
To call attention to the problems of the Dependencies of the United Kingdom; and to move a Resolution,
2. Debate on Private Members' Motions on 15 April will begin at 9.30 am and will end at 2.30 pm. Mr Stanbrook will introduce his motion and on the assumption that there is sufficient interest voiced by backbenches in the subject (as there may well be), the usual procedure would be for the Government Minister responsible to wind up the debate, thus "talking out" the motion at 2.30 pm, when there is no vote.
3.
The full terms of Mr Stanbrook's motion have not yet been revealed but I shall let you have them as soon as possible,
4.
This, and other Private Members' Motions for 15 April will be considered by Mr Biffen, Leader of the House, on Monday 11 April (there will be no Legislation Committee meeting until Wednesday 20 April).
UND, who I assume will co-ordinate this subject, will accordingly need to prepare a letter for the Minister to send to Mr Biffen by 11 April setting out our views on the Motion, and a draft speech etc as necessary for whichever Minister handles the debate. I should be grateful to know whether Mr Onslow will be able to handle this debate, or whether Mr Rifkind will take it on.
