The prisoner was born in Rangoon, Burma, where his family migrated from Foochow, Fukien Province, China in 1948. They operated a Chinese restaurant and were able to lead a financially stable living all the time. In his upbringing, the prisoner received due parental care and guidance and was in harmonious relationship with his family. At the age of five, he commenced schooling. At the height of the Anti-Chinese movement in Burma in 1967, he, a Primary four student then returned to Foochow, Fukien Province, China with his elder sister. His grandmother, father and elder brother had also returned to China, leaving his mother, eldest brother and younger sister behind to look after their business.

As a result of the Cultural Revolution in China, the prisoner was unable to resume schooling until two years after his return to Foochow. However, he eventually completed his primary and elementary secondary education there. In 1970, his father went alone to Hong Kong to seek a better living. The prisoner was then left to the care of his grandmother and elder siblings. All along, they relied on the regular remittance from his mother in Burma. After the death of his grandmother in 1972 the prisoner and his siblings applied for emigration to Hong Kong to join their father. In the same year, his elder brother succeeded to come to Hong Kong whereas he and his elder sister did not do so until September 1973. In 1974 their restaurant in Burma was closed down. His mother, eldest brother and younger sister applied to come to Hong Kong but were not successful in their application. They then settled down in Macau.

Concerning his employment, he claimed that he had worked as a casual worker at various factories like Bakeland Company Limited, Kings Textile Company Limited, Nam Fung Textile Limited, Wheelock Textile Company Limited and Yuen Fung Weaving Factory but no confirmation could be made due to insufficient information.
