a false fantasy although co-incidently, the mother of Chan Ching, Prisoner's sister-in-law committed suicide in Mainland China together with her husband in 1961. The 2 sons might be Prisoner's 2 nephews in Hong Kong.) The Prisoner repeatedly claimed his innocence. In fact he had submitted his application for appeal. Anyway, Prisoner was able to relate more about his concern towards his aged parents. Right from the start and in many occasions, Prisoner repeatedly warned not to allow any of his parents to know about his case and his present imprisonment. He mentioned very little about his siblings who seemed to have a very remote relationship and had never visited him here in the Prison. His chief concern was his father's traffic accident compensation which he claimed to have employed a lawyer through Legal Aid Department for a lump sum of $18,000 a few years ago.
He was willing to give the new address of his mother simply because he hoped that his nephews could be urged to pay him a visit and tell him about the result of claim. Towards the end of visit, Prisoner was co- operative enough to mentioned about Mr. YEUNG Chi, the Wing Lung Bank Guard and Mr. CHAN Hing-ho, the watch accessories businessman to whom he had years of acquaintance and who could be contacted for enquiry upon his character and general behavior. Prisoner finally proceeded to complain about being treated unfairly since the conflict involved 2 young co-tenants too. He preferred to await for result of his appeal. Unlike what was learned later, Prisoner in this interview did not impress to be a quiet introvert. Perhaps, this could be his first chance after imprisonment to be approached and talked about his case and listened to his feeling of anxiety.
G. Summary
Prisoner was brought up in a very loose link family in Mainland China where the father was a drunkard and the mothers illiterate women. Formal education was never stressed. The children were left to survive on their own with no guidance on trade; character formation or brotherhood concern. Being the middle child, Prisoner learned his independency early and strived for his livelihood alone in Hong Kong. In the years of struggle as a lonely ranger, he had learned to hide up his real compassion and build up an embankment to protect himself. Fortunately, Prisoner could make good use of his watch repairing skill and managed to earn himself an adequate living. However, the very nature of his trade further prevented him from any group experience or an active social circle. He remained single and lived independently with no undesirable hobbies nor dubious associates influence. He was hard-working and very frugal which rendered him financially stable and had established himself favourably in the eyes of his parents and nephews as distinguished from other siblings. emotional need found good outlet in his concern towards the aged parents and young nephews. However, being long accustomed to free and independent life pattern, Prisoner still preferred to live away from home. Life could be simple and peaceful if Prisoner did not enter into conflicts with his next room co-tenants whom he regarded as young and unruly. Since Prisoner used to get his way smoothly and had good command of respect from his young nephews, the very fact of losing the fight to 2 youngsters when he had such friendly relation with policemen in the district drove him to seek police support. This in turn made him lost support from the other co-tenants in the house. Taking his past 2 bitter experience in Yuen Long and with the metal ware shop owner, it was generally impressed that Prisoner's feeling of a single old man being bullied rather than purely resentment of injustice held stronger to reiterate his self-protection stinct and stubborn resistance.
