The defendant's parents visited him or the 2nd October, 1980 when he was
in police custody and told him that if he had committed the murders he
should admit his wrong, otherwise not. They left him and the defendant made
a third statement to the police which formed the basis of his "defence"
at his trial, though he himself gave no evidence and called no witnesses.

His third statement was made principally in answer to questions asked of
him by the police. He suggested he was then making a clean breast of
everything. In this statement he said he met a man called
