GENERAL INFORMATION
The prisoner had an unhappy childhood. He was deprived of a normal family upbringing. At the age of three, the prisoner lost his father who succumbed to heart tumour. Thus, his mother had to take up both parental roles. She worked as a domestic amah for the foreigners. Due to the job nature, she had to live in her working place but was allowed to bring along with her one or two children. The prisoner and his youngest sister who was born a few days after the father's death, had to be placed under other's care.

Through the arrangement of his mother's employer, the prisoner was admitted into the Children's Garden of Christian Children's Fund, Inc. at Wu Kai Sha N.T. which has been converted to be the Y.M.C.A. Youth Village. The youngest sister was placed under the care of the aged maternal grandmother at Silvermine Bay, Lantau Island. Virtually, the family was disintegrated. The prisoner stayed at Children's Garden for about three years. During this period, he could meet his other family members only a few times a year.

Later, the prisoner started his primary education at Chung Shan Primary School, a boarding school at Hung Hom, He studied there for about four years till Primary 4. During this time, his elder brother was with him and they were able to meet the other family members about twice a month.

The prisoner did not express a strong unhappy feeling towards the separation with his family in his early childhood. He realized the necessity of such arrangements. Nevertheless, he was in a sad tone when this was mentioned and was not ready to reveal it at the beginning of the enquiry. So was the attitude of his mother. It seemed that both of them had tried to shelve this traumatic incident from memory.

After the mother worked at the Military Force, the family was allocated quarters at the Victoria Barracks. Since then the family could live together again.

The prisoner continued to study Primary 5 at Sai Ying Pun Government Primary School. Both his academic performance and conduct at school were satisfactory. After graduating from this primary school, he studied at Caritas St. Francis Prevocational School from 1973 till 1976. His academic performance progressed steadily in these three years. He was remarked as diligent, polite, respectful and helpful to teachers. At the same time, he
was active in sports and out-door activities. He played well in many sports such as swimming, bowling and cycling. He had also obtained the Blue-belt in Judo and was once an assistant Instructor in the Judo Interest Club of the Caritas Caine Road Centre.
