THE OFFENCES AGAINST THE PERSON (AMENDMENT)
ORDINANCE 1982
(No. 23 of 1982)
This Ordinance increases the maximum
sentence for kidnapping from 14 years' imprisonment to life imprisonment.

The former maximum penalty was somewhat out of line with that of life imprisonment provided for other offences of similar or even less gravity. Furthermore there have recently been some kidnapping cases that have occasioned judicial and media criticism of the inadequacy of the former penalty.
3.
Before the Acting Governor assented to the Bill in the name and on behalf of Her Majesty, the Attorney General advised that he could properly do so.
