INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION FOR DOCUMENTATION

STATUTES *

Preamble

1. The aim of the International Federation for Documentation (FID) is to promote, through international cooperation, research in and development of documentation, which includes inter alia the organization, storage, re- trieval, dissemination and evaluation of information, however recorded, in the fields of science, technology, social sciences, arts and humanities.

2. The nature of the Federation has been and should continue to be prin- cipally that of a federation of national members. This means that the principal responsibility in the government of the Federation remains in the hands of bodies representative of various countries, whereas it is agreed that individuals participate as specialists in the work of the Federation.

Article 1. NAME AND REGISTERED OFFICE

The name of the organization is the International Federation for Documentation, abbreviated as FID, and hereinafter called the Federation.

The Registered Office of the Federation is situated in a commune of Brussels, at present at 90, Avenue des Armures, 1190 Brussels. It may be transferred to another commune of Brussels by decision of the Council.

Art. 2. OBJECTIVES

The Federation has among its general objectives:

a) to group at international level organizations and individuals interested in the problems of documentation, to coordinate their efforts and to provide an international forum for exchange of opinions and ex- periences;

b) to promote the study, organization and practice of documentation in all its forms, and to contribute to the creation of an international net- work of information systems;

c) to identify the main trends of research in the documentation field and to promote and coordinate this research at the international level; d) to facilitate the definition of criteria and techniques for the evaluation of cost effectiveness, management and marketing techniques;

e) to promote the training of documentalists, information specialists and information scientists in developing countries;

f) to study the information needs and habits of scientists, engineers - and other specialists and to promote training of users in the more efficient

utilization of documentation and information services;

g) to improve further the Universal Decimal Classification and to
