HONG KONG INFORMATION
Hong Kong lies at the south-eastern tip of the People's Republic of China, at approximately the same latitude as Mexico City, the Bahamas and Hawaii.
Location and geography are two reasons why you will find Hong Kong full of intriguing contrasts. It is a duty-free shopper's paradise where you can find many a bargain in all sorts of items.
You can enjoy shopping and browsing in the air- conditioned arcades in your hotel and in big complexes and department stores, or you can venture into the street markets.
Only 10% of Hong Kong's 403 square miles are taken up by modern cities which flank one of the world's most beautiful harbours. The rest is the rural beauty of the New Territories and the outer islands set in the South China Sea.
Climate
September in Hong Kong is warm and humid with temperatures averaging 27.5°C and relative humidity of 79%.
Clothing
Generally light and casual summer clothes are recommended but remember all hotels, restaurants, etc. are fully air-conditioned.
Currency
There are no restrictions on the import or export of money into and out of Hong Kong. U.S. dollars are the most widely used foreign currency, one U.S. dollar equalling approximately 5.90 Hong Kong dollars.
Visas
Visas are not required for a visit to Hong Kong for one week for holders of most passports. In fact, for most countries, visitors may stay two weeks or more on a visit without a visa.
Visas are always required for Nationals of Albania, Bulgaria, People's Republic of China, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, German Democratic Republic, Hungary, Kampuchea, Laos, Mongolia, Poland, Romania, Vietnam and the Soviet Union and holders of Taiwan and Iranian passports.
Congress participants are reminded that Hong Kong law requires residents and visitors to carry proper identification at all times - preferably passports.
