If the OAG-designate is overseas, the notification of The Queen's approval is sent by telegram to the OAG of the Territory in which he is serving. The same telegram may, if necessary, give the text of a proposed press announcement (see para 3.6.3). The formal letter of appointment is sent to him at a convenient opportunity thereafter; if he is returning to the UK for leave and consultations with the FCO, this may be after his arrival in the UK.
Governors and Commissioners are ordinarily received by The Queen on appointment or at the first opportunity thereafter. They may be accompanied by their wives. DT Staffing Section will ask Protocol and Conference Department to make the arrangements. It is not the practice for an OAG to be granted an audience on relinquishing his office.
If it is decided to recommend to the Secretary of State that the term of office of the existing OAG should be extended, and the Secretary of State agrees, the procedure is as follows. A senior official, normally=
, writes semi-officially to the OAG about his willingness to serve on for a stated period, and if he agrees, a semi-official letter is then prepared by the DT Staffing Section, and sent by the Secretary of State's Private Secretary to the Palace to seek The Queen's approval for the proposed extension. This letter gives reasons for the extension proposed and, unless there is some reason to the contrary, a definite commencing date and period. When The Queen has given her approval, the DT Staffing Section informs the OAG, zu formal letter or
telegram if in his Territory; and tells him that he may, if he wishes, make a suitable local announcement, the text of which should be telegraphed to the FCO and communicated to News Department in advance, in case of press enquiries. There is normally no announcement made in the UK. The OAG's Commission is not affected in any way by this procedure.
