HONG KONG: MS CHRISTINE VERTUCCI
preanimes decision had
lear upheld,
I
1. Mr Terry Waite, the Archbishop of Canterbury's Personal Assistant, telephoned on this case. He had previously spoken to me about a week ago. He had heard that Ms Vertucci's request to have her stay extended had been turned down. confirmed that her objection had been considered by the Governor in Council on 9 February and that she had been so informed I explained that she would not be hustled out of Hong Kong and would be given every opportunity to leave voluntarily. There would be various procedures which might enable an administrative appeal to an immigration tribunal.
2. I also told Mr Waite confidentially that suggestions that Ms Vertucci was being removed because of her activities on local Hong Kong issues were wrong.
Mr Waite accepted this and said that he would continue to advise the Archbishop of Canterbury that the Church should keep their heads down for the moment.
