New Certificate of Education Introduced for Certain Categories

A finance clerk employed by the Qingyuan Woodware Factory in Qingyuan County, Guangdong Province, said that in August 1982, the Shaoguan authorities implemented compulsory refresher courses for working youths who were primary or middle school graduates between 1968 and 1980. Evening schools have been set up by various working units to provide refresher courses at primary, junior and senior middle school
level for the urban workers and rural commune members. A
half-yearly examination tests the workers' progress. A worker may resit the examination if he fails. A certificate of educ-
ation, which will supercede the one issued between 1968 and 1980, will be issued to those successful in the refresher
courses. Traveller said a range of working units in Shaoguan have recently begun employing only those who have attained the new certificate of education. There is a ruling that
workers who have completed the refresher course at senior
middle school level may apply for employment in the adminis- trative sectors of commercial (finance) corporations.

in the past two years. The Nanzhang County People's Hospital now has 300 beds and can handle complicated sur- gical operations. In the past, these types of cases were referred to the Municipal or Prefectual hospitals. Many communes have seen a marked improvement in environmental hygiene. Some wealthy Production Teams have donated money to their FB's for the establishment of public health
