People's Daily calls for a Correct Appraisal and Handling of
Class Struggle

Today's 'People's Daily' editorial describes the overwhelming majority of social contradictions in China as those among the people and an extremely small percentage as those between the enemy and the people. The paper also says that class struggle should be dealt with within the limits of the country's laws and handled according to legal proce- dures. Hostile elements should be punished by law.

The paper says that HU Yaobang, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPC, reiterated the Party's appraisal and basic policies on the question of current classes and class struggle in his report to the 12th Party Congress last September. The paper quotes his report, say- ing, "following the climination of the exploiting classes as such, most contradictions in our society do not have the nature of class struggle, and class struggle no longer con- stitutes the principal contradiction
. However, within certain limits, class struggle will continue to exist for a long time and may even sharpen under certain conditions". 16.
