Mr Li said that there were still around 15,000 refugees in Hong Kong. Resettlement in other countries was largely drying up. He knew that the UK had fulfilled its original quota but the Minister would be well aware of the problems in Hong Kong, particularly relating to housing, social services, etc. Lord Belstead said that he fully understood the difficulties. He referred to the problems for HMG which had, in addition: to the 10,000 quota, resettled a further 1,000 from the previous administration and were taking ship rescues, etc. He was sorry that there was no further comfort that he could give at this stage.
The meeting ended at 16.10 hours.
