Illegal Recent Arrivals from China formed 3.9% of the population at mid 1982 and were involved in 9.0% of all crime during the first six months of that year. Their disproportionate involvement in crime is most significant in pickpocketing (24.0%), robbery (13.8%), burglary (7.2%), preventive crime (12.8%) and abstracting electricity (16.9%)

offences.

The number and percentage of Illegal Evaders involved in crime is low, but the figures of persons prosecuted is disproportionately high. The significant involvement of mic. this sub-group in robbery should be noted.

Based on the figures for 1981 and the first half of 1982 it is apparent that the involvement of Illegal Recent Arrivals and Illegal Evaders in crime is an increasing problem.
