Interviewee was former S.Vietnamese air force pilot, recently released from 5 years in re-education camps. Escaped to seek "political asylum" in US. Interviewee spent 17 months in US prior to 1974; he would have left Vietnam regardless of policy of overseas governments and would commit suicide (sic) rather than be repatriated.
All 3 seeking improved economic opportunities
overseas. Main inspiration
letters from friends and relatives overseas. None listened to 3BC/VOA. None would have left Vietnam
if they thought there was no chance of resettlement
or a possibility of repatriation
Those interviewed were all comparatively well educated and from the upper social strata. 4 were ethnic Chinese who had left Kampuchea in 1975 and had resettled in S.Vietnam. All sought political asylum or religious freedom. All paid large sums of money for their departure, and claim that they would have left Vietnam regardless of other governments' policies. Ethnic breakdown, 47 Chinese, 24 Vietnamese. The Vietnamese were mainly former S.Vietnamese military personnel and their families, the Chinese mainly merchants both from S.Vietnam and Kampuchea. Most had close relatives overseas.
