Recently, in response to the situation in Thailand, the
Und States resumed processing of some Khmer refugees.
The High Commissioner has indicated that this will assist
in obtaining further resettlement offers from other
countries. That premise now must be put into practice
for Khmer and other Indochinese refugees. We can all take
satisfaction from what has been done. Let us resolve that.......
even as the problem diminishes we continue to work together
to retain what we have worked so hard to establish
In sum, while we have often stressed the need for
resettlement on an urgent basis to preserve the practice
of first asylum, let us be very clear that other durable
solutions must be vigorously pursued. The problem of an
appropriate balance in the resettlement effort must be
addressed more vigorously.
