INDO-CHINESE REFUGEES

(12)

1AF8/3

1. Your letter of 2 February to Sir Philip Haddon-Cave refers to the possibility of your speaking to the Australian High Commission in London about reducing Hong Kong's burden by an increased offtake of refugees to Australia, perhaps through the good offices of the UNHCR.

2. By way of briefing, you may wish to have the enclosed report from the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence: "Indo-Chinese Refugee Resettlement Australia's Involvement", published here recently. The Report surveys the impact of the refugee crisis since 1975 and makes a number of recommendations. It could prove a useful source of material for use in discussion with

Australia House.
