Thank you for your letter of 29 July. It was kind of you to send me the record of your meeting on 21 July with Sir Edward Youde.
I note your increased conviction that we should take a firm line with the Chinese on this problem. As you say, the question is how firm we can be without prejudicing negotiations about the future of Hong Kong. I agree that we can look at this again after the Prime Minister's visit and that both points of view should be reflected in the briefing for her visit.
