AIR SERVICES WITH CHINA

The brief on air services for the Prime Minister's
visit to China,, PMVW (82)8, explained the difficulty we
have in obtaining for British Airways and Cathay Pacific
a reasonable share of air services between Hong Kong and
points in China, and drew attention to a difference of

vicw between Ministers in the Department of Trade and the
700 which would need to be resolved before the next round
of air services discussions.

Subject to final confirmation from Peking, these are now due to take place in the week commencing 6 December,
and my negotiators will need, to know by then what line
they should take to secure for BA and Cathay Pacific..
improvements in the air services they can operate between
Hong Kong and points in China without risking damage to
the wider negotiations which the Prime Minister set in
train.
