6. CONCLUDING REMARKS

Preliminary analyses of limited available wind data in the Deep Bay

area indicate that the prevailing flow in the area is different from that of

other locations in Hong Kong. The prevailing flow at Tsim Bei Tsui suggests more

frequent occasions suitable for aircraft landing or take-off operations towards

the southwest than at Chek Lap Kok. However, the quantity and quality of

available wind data are not adequate to support firm conclusions.

Visibility conditions over Deep Bay are likely to be similar to those

near Chek Lap Kok. There are difficulties in the interpretation of available

cloud base data. The observations made at Ping Shan are probably not applicable

to Deep Bay.

Reports made during the limited number of RHKAAF flights so far suggest

that turbulence and wind shear are likely to be less severe at Deep Bay than at

Chek Lap Kok. However, Kai Kung Leng and the nearby hills may give rise to some

significant turbulence or wind shear in the approach towards a runway in Deep Bay

when winds are strong easterly.

The construction of an airport in Deep Bay will change the tidal

characteristics significantly. This will require a thorough study in view of

its possible impact on the civil engineering design and the ecology of the

coastline around Deep Bay.
