INTRODUCTION

The Deep Bay area was examined shortly after the War as a possible

site for the construction of an airport. A special effort to collect meteoro-

logical data was organised by the Royal Observatory in 1949 and 1950 (Ref. 1).

In 1981, interest in Deep Bay as a possible alternative to Chek Lap

Kok as the site of an airport was revived. In late September, the Royal

Observatory was requested to review the data available which are relevant to

the construction and operation of an airport in the Deep Bay area and prepare

a report by late October 1981. Most of the analyses presented have been carried

out specifically for this report. Because of the very short time available, it

was not possible to scrutinize the data and the derived analyses up to the

standards normally required for similar studies. The results are subject to

possible revisions in the future and the deductions should therefore be treated

as preliminary opinions only.
