At the same time, two important organizations were established directly as a result of government policies i.e. the Mutual Aid Committees and the District Boards. He viewed MAC's as government's manipulation of the general public and was interested to see how DB fared with locally elected representatives.
He therefore, concluded that young people including students had come to a cross- road.
5. Questions and discussions followed each talk. Given the opportunity, each speaker urged their fellow students to do'something when they eventually returned to Hong Kong. Joining pressure groups and District Boards were recognized as possible and positive
action.
6. Most of the participants, however, were listeners and not many of them were keen to speak out. I was also a quiet observer as there were no wild allegation and distortion.
There were, however, criticism that H.K. Government deliberately supported bankers, financiers, property developers at the expense of the general public.
7. I met FUNG for the first time and found him to be a good
rator. It was made abundantly clear that he would be very active in the future when he returns to Hong Kong later this year. I had the impression that he was trying to form an U.K. Federation of Hong Kong Students-Hong Kong Branch or a similar organization.
8. After the conference, I managed to speak to a few students on different topics and two interesting points came up. First, Student Societies would like to show video taped recording of current affairs programmes produced by Radio Hong Kong to their members These programmes includo Under the Lion Rotek (p 34, TO and銼鏘集. They asked whether 1KGO London would be able to obtain them from Radio H.K. and make available to Student Societies on loan. Secondly, some alleged that our subsidies to Students Lociation wont to Chinone Budent Bociation of various Universiting and Polytechnics without knowing more about their backgrounī. Sometimes, some of these are actively run by Chinese students from Malaysia and Singapore while Hong Kong Students did not enjoy the benefit. I thought this might merit action/investigation by our
Student Adviser.
