PRESS RELEASE
The Chairman of the Hong Kong Future Ad Hoc Committee of Reform Club of Hong Kong, announces that the Club has formally appointed a reputable international survey company, Survey Research Hongkong Limited (whose telephone number is 3-434181), to conduct an opinion poll on the future of Hong Kong after 1997. The result of the poll and the report thereof will be available to the press by the end of March 1982.
The Club is considering the possibility of forming a delegation to proceed to London to present the report of the poll to the British Government as well as certain members of the Parliament in the nearest future to pursue the issue further.
The Club draws the public attention to the fact that after the Club had forwarded its proposal on the future of Hong Kong to the top Chinese leaders including Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party Mr. Deng Xiaoping, a report was subsequently published on 20th January 1982 by the Agence France Presse that China hoped to resolve the problem of Hong Kong's future so as to ensure a continued British presence while not jeopardising its own sovereignty, according to a high-ranking Chinese diplomat whq hinted at the possibility of transforming Hong Kong into a free port. The Club has good reason to believe that the statement so made by the said Chinese diplomat was a response to the Club's proposal forwarded to Peking earlier - that statement coincides in every respect with the Club's proposal.
