SUBJECT:
FUTURE OF HONG KONG
1. In your letter of 15 March you said that the Prime
Minister would like to hold a meeting on this subject
in May, probably on 12 May, with Sir M MacLehose and
Sie E Youde as well as the Foreign and Commonwealth
Secretary.
>
2. Sir Percy Cradock has been much involved in the
formulation of policy on the future of Hong Kong, and
his assessment of Chinese reactions from his viewpoint
as Ambassador in Peking is naturally of crucial
importance. We believe that his presence at the 12 May
meeting could be very valuable.
3. I enclose a draft telegram which you may like to
send to Peking if the Prime Minister agrees that
Sir P Cradock should if possible return for the meeting.
