We spoke about my forthcoming holiday in the Far East which, as I might have expected, is getting rather out of hand. As I mentioned to you, it was intended as a purely private holiday with my wife but I felt that I could not visit these countries without getting in touch with the appropriate Directors of Prison Services. It would be a discourtesy not to call on them and I have already agreed to take a Passing Out parade in Hong Kong. The problem will be to balance the official engagements with my original intention to have a private holiday.

As I mentioned to you, Sir Brian Cubbon intends to write to the Governor of Hong Kong and the High Commissioner of Singapore both of whom are personal friends of his to let them know that I and my wife are making visits.

As a result of approaches to them by Tom Garner, the Commissioner of Correctional Services in Hong Kong, they are arranging for the hotels at which I will stay in the various territories I am visiting. I will let you know the names of these hotels when I have them to hand. While I am in Hong Kong, I will be staying with Tom Garner.

But my

I thought I ought to let you know of my plans since it is now clear that I shall not escape some official engagements. intention is still to have a private holiday.

Yours sincerely,
