CALL BY SIR ANTHONY JOLLIFFE, LORD MAYOR ELECT OF LONDON, ON THE PUS

1.

Sir Anthony Jolliffe called on the PUS this morning. He said that like other Lord Mayors he would like to do a certain amount of travelling during his year of Office. He wished this to be for a purpose and to promote Britain's economic and commercial interests, and not to be merely ceremonial or for tourism. He had organised a system which would ensure that he was fully briefed about the City's interest in countries which he might visit. He would welcome the PUS's thoughts on where he might go, but he himself had the following ideas:

2.

i.

Brussels

He had various connections in Brussels and thought it might be useful to visit the City and the European Commission. He knew Mr Tugendhat well and planned to get him to London for various City functions.

ii.

Japan

He had connections with Japan and knew it well. He was on the Board, for example, of J A L Trading Companies. There was good will towards him and his election as Lord Mayor had been well publicised. He thought that a visit to Tokyo, perhaps at the time of the British Exhibition, which he understood was scheduled for August 1983, might be helpful.

iii. Berlin

He had been invited to go to Berlin to visit the 2nd Batallion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in April of next year (see attached correspondence).

The PUS said he thought that visits to Brussels, Japan and Berlin would all be sensible, the first two for economic and the last primarily for political reasons. He would however want to think a little more about the Lord Mayor elect's suggestions. In the course of discussion it was also agreed:

i.

that it might be a good idea for the Lord Mayor elect to visit Hungary;

ii. that we would examine the possibility of a visit to Latin America as part of our present attempts to reestablish links there;

iii. we would examine the case for a visit to the Middle East, in particular the Gulf.
