Prime Minister's Tour of the Far East:
Programmes
I enclose collated programmes for the Prime Minister and for Mr Thatcher for each of the forthcoming visits to Japan, China, Hong Kong and India. There may
of course be further minor
changes especially in the case of China where arrangements for press interviews and the visit to Canton remain to be finalised. We have classified the China programme 'Restricted' at the Ambassador's request as it has not yet been released to the press.

You will see that (following consultation between the FCO and Caroline Stephens) the Embassy in Tokyo have arranged the meeting on 21 September between Mr Thatcher and Mr Simmons requested in your letter of 13 September, but have managed to combine this with a game of golf that day. Mr Kato (the former Japanese Ambassador to London, personality note enclosed) and others had already agreed to join Mr Thatcher for golf and lunch, and the Embassy felt that there would have been embarrassment in cancelling this arrangement. We hope that this is satisfactory. Incidentally the Embassy have arranged for Mr Thatcher to borrow left-handed clubs, but they assume he will bring his own golfing clothing and shoes: western sizes are not always easy to obtain in Japan.
