PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT TO THE FAR EAST:
PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT
Peking telegram number 441 of 12 August clears the way for an announcement of the Prime Minister's visit to Japan, China and Hong Kong. Rather, than make separate announcements I suggest we should issue one press release timed to coincide with the Japanese announcement expected sometime after 24 August (Tokyo telegram number 419 refers). I hope Hong Kong will not find it too difficult to continue fending off enquiries until then.
I enclose a draft announcement for consideration by you and the political departments. It is based on the draft which Nigel
Cox sent to Janet Whiting on 5 August.
May I leave it to you to clear the draft with FED and HK and GD, and subsequently with the Posts concerned?
