Waterworks
Work on the reception and distribution system to handle an increased supply of water from China is in progress. The exploitation of Hong Kong's own resources was completed with the construction of the High Island reservoir. Total reservoir capacity is 578 mn cubic metres and a desalting plant can produce an emergency supply of 0.2 mm cubic metres a day.
Daily consumption of fresh water is currently 1.6 mn cubic metres of which about one-third is purchased from China. The China component of daily consumption will rise to 66% by 1991.
Land Production
It is the Government's policy that formed and serviced land should always be readily available to meet both the needs of the public works programme and the expected needs of the private sector. To this end the annual production target over the next five years is 157 gross hectares. The bulk of this land will be within the New Towns..
