In response to Lord Kadoorie's approach, the Department of Industry
brought together the expertise of UK manufacturing industry, the
electricity supply industry and the financial institutions in the
and we see today the
presentation of a unique package of proposals
successful culmination of those proposals.
My Government were most gratified when progress on the 'A' station
went so well that we were asked by Lord Kadoorie and the Directors
of CL and P and Exxon to repeat the venture for a 4 x 660 megawatt
sister station

This order served to reinforce the unique partnership between the UK,
CL and P and Exxon.
The level of involvement of UK companies in both the 'A' and 'B'
stations and the transmission line

is greatly valued by the UK Government.
It is always pleasing to hear that the performance of UK companies has
met expectations. And I understand progress on the 'A' station has
more than met initial hopes. This project has fully justified the firm
faith that Lord Kadoorie and the directors of CL and P and Exxon have in
the UK's power plant industry capabilities.
There are two particular aspects of this project which I should like to
mention briefly. The first is the excellent working relationship that
has been established between CL and P and the UK companies involved.
This relationship has enabled any problems that have arisen during
construction to be resolved quickly and satisfactorily.
