A number of points arose about the banquet which the Prime Minister will be hosting. Mrs. Thatcher would lik

do everything possible to make this a rather special occasion. To that end, we shall be investigating whether we can take out silver centrepieces for the tables, together with silver candlesticks and perhaps other pieces of silver. Sir Percy Cradock will also be considering whether any other special arrangements can be made. The Prime Minister would like to invite to the banquet any British industrialists who may happen to be in Peking at the time of her visit - and would not mind it being suggested to certain industrialists that if they wished to time a business visit to China appropriately, they could be invited to the banquet.

I shall be writing separately about gifts.
