Thank you for your letter of 23 December about the Prime Minister's visit to Sunderland on 12 March.

The Prime Minister has now decided to fly up to Newcastle 3 that morning and to make a visit to NEI Power Engineering Limited at Gateshead. As part of this visit, she will open the new robot welding workshop that NEI have built. There will be a Conservative Party lunch. And in the afternoon the Prime Minister will launch the Austin & Pickersgill vessel being built for Sir Y. K. Pao.
I should be grateful if you could provide briefing for the Prime Minister's visit to NEI, and for the launch of the Austin & Pickersgill vessel. It would be useful if your briefing could
include the usual background on the Newcastle region.
I am copying this to Roderic Lyne (FCO), Helen Ghosh (DOE) and Mary McVerry (DHSS).
Richard Riley, Esq., Department of Industry.
