plant is also nearing completion in this new town and the District Board is promoting industrial investment to provide job opportunities for the future population expansion.

The total estimated Government expenditure for the

development of this new town is $15,900 million.

YHEN LONG The new tow in the northwest New Territories is likely to have two population centres, 141,800 people in Yuen Long and 135,000 people in Tin Shui Wai. The Yuen Long district at present has a population of 51,400 people.

The district'is being studied with a view for a significant population development strategy for the northwest New Territories a whole; the strategy has not yet been finalised. However proposals are being examined, which would link Yuen Long to Tuen Mun by means of a light rail system and to Tai Po by an extension of the Kosloon Canton Railway.

The total estimated expenditure for the new town is $4,506 million.

FANLING This former rural centre it is planned will be incorporated into the northeast new town of the future.

Fanling new town itself has an outlying development plan area of 780 hectares, with 280 hectares allocated for public housing, 65 hectares for industrial uses and 125 hectares for major community infrastructure.

The inland new tow is one of the two planned new towns which do not require reclamation to produce the necessary land. The other one is Yuen Long.

It will be the home of 225,000 people by next decade, which is nearly five times its population now and about 30,000 people will live in the three public housing estates to be built in the next few

years.

Kajor projects here include the Kowloon Canton Railway electrification, road improvements, and sewage treatment for industrial and agricultural wastes.

TAI PO This former market town has undergone a drastic change in the last decade and it is planned to provide accomodation for 240,000 people, more than three times its present population of 70,000 within the next 15 years.

The area within the outlying development plan is about 2,900 hectares, including 250 hectares for public housing and 80 hectares for an industrial estate.

The Tai Fo Industrial Estate, Stage One, has been completed, There providing facilities for land and capital intensive industries. will be three public housin, estates in the district, to accommodate 100,000 people. One of these housing estates was completed last year, one is under construction and construction of the third will be in later this year.
