question of Hong Kong's future would need
careful study. At an appropriate time China
would discuss the problem with the "various
circles" in Hong Kong and all the parties
concerned and take heed of their views.
However, no date was specified.
The question of the Prime Minister's visit
to China in September 1982 was raised and it
was noted that the Hong Kong question was
likely to feature in the Prime Minister's
discussions with Chinese leaders. In the
meantime, indications were given that China wo
not do anything to harm the prosperity of
Hong Kong.
It was noted that Zhao appreciated The
Governor's encouragement for investment in
the SEZs. The Governor remarked that it was
useful for major Hong Kong developers to
continue to lobby China on this question
but sounded a note of caution and said that th
would need to be carefully monitored.
