THE GREEN HILLS AND BEYOND: AN EXHIBITION OF TUEN MUN'S HISTORY & FUTURE GROWTHE

The title of this exhibition points both to the rural background of the New Town and towards the next few years when the Plan for the New Town will be completed and a new large self-contained com- munity of Tuen Mun residents will be living and working in a modern environment.

In the ten years or so of the implementation of Plan there has been a complete transformation of the landscape. The sleepy old fishing port is now sur- rounded by bustling high rise factory and residential blocks. As well, although the old Castle Peak was a seaside retreat for holidaymakers and weekend pic- nicers, who visited the site of the ancient monastery on the slopes of Tsing Shan, the Green sacred hill of Tuen Mun, the New Town will be proud to possess all the modern amentities of a town planned to provide the sporting, recreational, educational and medical facilities needed by a thriving community of the present day.

The old Castle Peak was a distant outpost of the Western New Territories. The journey from Hong Kong took several hours along a narrow road which wound its leisurely way past the villas and beaches

of the mainland. Already the Tuen Mun highway is a major artery linking the New Town with the docks of Kowloon. The massive power station at Clek Lap Kok has port facilities of its own for tankers to bring oil. Very soon Tuen Mun travellers to Yuen Long and other parts of the New Territories will be able to use the planned light rail transport system. This will connect too with the MTR at Tsuen Wan. Then, for those who prefer speed and a trip on the waters of the harbour will be able to avail themselves of the modern miracle of transport the hovercraft.

The future prospects of Tuen Mun are bright in every way; and they are being brought into reality with every day that passes.

However, Tuen Mun is an ancient settlement as well. It has a history going back to Tang times at least. Recent archaelogical finds in the area can even roll back our horizons of the past several thousands of years.

The purpose of this exhibition is to show local residents and visitors alike the benefits which the future holds in store for them. Equally important it will put on exhibition the historical roots of this ancient district, now transformed, in order that the new city-dwellers of Tuen Mun can feel that they too share in this long-established and flourishing heritage drawn from the tradition whicvh still nourishes the citizen of Hong Kong in the late Twentieth century.
