9. The UK is the 6th largest supplier to Hong Kong after Japan, China, the USA, Taiwan and Singapore, and in 1981 imports from the UK accounted for 4.5% of Hong Kong's total imports (5.6% of Hong Kong's total imports in manufactures). Major items of imports from the UK include transport equip-
ment and parts (17% of total imports from the UK in 1981), furskins (5%), inorganic chemicals (3%), iron, steel and
aluminium structures (3%) and textiles (3%).
10. As an export market for the UK, Hong Kong's share of total UK exports increased from 0.8% to 1.1% in the period 1976-80. On a per capita basis, Hong Kong is one of the
largest importers of goods from the UK. According to 1980
UK trade figures, Hong Kong's per capita level of imports
from the UK was £112, compared with £83 in the case of
Federal Republic of Germany, which in overall value terms
is the UK's biggest market.
11. Hong Kong is now the UK's largest market in the Far East, ahead even of Japan, and second only to India in Asia (but
Hong Kong receives no aid).
